K–12 California Mathematics Curriculum
Math Curriculum Created for California Educators and Students
California Math & YOU is an engaging, focused, and coherent instructional K–12 math program designed entirely on the new 2023 Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools.
California Math & YOU integrates the big ideas of each mathematical concept while building students’ conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency. Teachers are encouraged to help students investigate, dig deeper into their learning, and develop confidence in their problem-solving abilities through rich, easy-to-use teaching resources.
Empowering California Educators
Big Ideas Learning equips teachers with instructional strategies proven to accelerate student learning. In California Math & YOU, those high-impact teaching strategies are woven with a strong conceptual framework and connections to the big ideas of mathematics, guiding students to learn more deeply and retain their conceptual understanding.
Learning Targets and Success Criteria
The Learning Targets and Success Criteria are labeled at the beginning of each lesson enabling teachers to communicate clearly where students are headed in their learning.
Standards for Mathematical Practice
With the California Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) labeled on the first page of every lesson, teachers and students have more visibility into the lesson's topic.
Teaching Edition Notes
Laurie’s Notes (K–2) and Nick’s Notes (3–5) are available at point-of-use and provide teachers with expert instructional insights at every stage of the lesson and offer support for integrating Mathematical Practices. India’s Notes provides teachers with ways to support a diverse classroom, meeting the needs of each student's learning.
Effective Assessment Tools
The enhanced formative and summative assessments within California Math & YOU offer teacher-assignable, open-ended questions that break down students’ foundational skills and provide key insights into what students know.
Resources for Easy Lesson Planning
Teachers can create lesson plans easily, and quickly customize which resources to use with students and in what sequence; allowing each instructor to tailor lessons to their class’s unique needs.
Valuable Diagnostic Data
With strong diagnostic tools that provide student performance data, teachers can make informed instructional decisions. Teachers can assign remediation or enrichment resources based on system-recommended groupings and suggested resources.
Tiered Intervention Support
California Math & YOU K–12 Curriculum integrates groundbreaking, research-based math intervention strategies and MTSS resources directly into lessons— empowering YOU to intervene immediately and support students, boosting overall math outcomes.

WHY CHOOSE CALIFORNIA MATH & YOU?
Supporting Learning for California Students
The Big Idea of the Chapter is an investigative activity for students to work through relating the big idea of the upcoming chapter using real-life data contexts and data-science infographics, promoting students’ ability to see the big picture.
With each Investigate activity, students are encouraged to look back to think about what they have previously learned before they look ahead to the new concept, supporting the development of conceptual understanding.
Through clear, stepped-out examples in the Key Concepts, students can readily tie their conceptual understanding to procedural fluency.
The Reasoning page in each lesson provides students with rigorous opportunities to practice conceptual thinking in every lesson.
Math Talk creates opportunities for students to engage in rich math discussions with their peers and formulate a deeper understanding of core mathematical concepts. Data Talk callouts help teachers build students’ data literacy.
Rigor is an integral part of the California Math & YOU series. Rigor is featured in non-routine problems, rich problem-solving, and Dig Deeper problems.
Relevant Content Designed for College and Career Readiness
The career-themed chapters and the engaging Career Explorations (K-8) and Everyday Explorations Videos featuring National Geographic Explorers (9-12) at the beginning of each chapter of the California Math & YOU series are designed to encourage students to look beyond the classroom, sparking students’ curiosity with relevant connections to their lives, now and in the future. The Performance Tasks at the end of each chapter are related to the career focus and allow students to apply problem-solving skills in real-world, authentic scenarios.

OUR IMPACT
What Our Users Have To Say
The digital platform is a game changer for me. The video tutorials are explicit, engaging, and well-paced. The Formative Check provides immediate feedback on student progress, making it quick and easy to differentiate and provide support where needed. Since implementing the program 2 years ago, I have seen student growth and mathematical understanding that I've never seen in 20 years of teaching.
Our students have seen exponential growth after implementing Big Ideas Learning’s program with fidelity for two consecutive years. The lessons are concise and challenging. Additionally, we use the Progressions and Resources to meet with students either individually or in targeted small group instruction, to revisit specific skills as necessary, to enrich their understanding, and monitor their progress. The way the curriculum spirals supports the continuity of understanding in students from year to year.
As teachers, we all know anything new is always viewed with some level of skepticism. In our first year using Big Ideas, 63% of our grade 3-5 students met or exceeded their desired growth on our Spring 2022 state testing. As a team, we set a goal of 65% for Spring 2023 and committed to following the Big Ideas pacing and rigor. We were thrilled when our Spring 2023 growth for grades 3-5 on our state testing was 76% of students met or exceeded their desired growth! As we plan for 2024, we know teaching the program with fidelity is the way to go!
At the end of 2022 after our first year of BIM, our students were asked, "How often do you use ideas from school in your daily life?" and only 50% answered, "Almost always" or "Frequently". We made some adjustments to be sure all teachers were teaching the program with fidelity including keeping up the pace to cover all of the material. At the end of 2023, 65% of our students answered "Almost always" or "Frequently". We are thrilled at that increase as we seek success in how our students can see the connection between what happens in the classroom and what happens in life! Our teachers shared that the program is a big part of helping our students make that connection!
Big Ideas Learning allows teachers to have various tools at their fingertips (both print and digital) to help students practice and come to a deeper understanding of an array of math concepts. The proof of the program's success is in the data from the beginning-of-the-year assessments compared to the middle and end-of-year assessments. We are thrilled with the results and look forward to seeing how our students continue to grow this year as we head into the third year of using the program!
