Teacher Professional Development: Integrate California Common Core Math Standards into Daily Instruction
Big Ideas Learning has developed a professional development (PD) package designed to help you integrate the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) into daily instruction. We are excited to offer this PD session to all California teachers.
Everyday Instruction Through the Lens of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP)
California Math Teachers 100–120 minutes
DESCRIPTION
Participants will engage with each Standard for Mathematical Practice via fun problem-solving activities that will help them gain a deep understanding of each SMP. Strategies will be modeled to help teachers learn how to meaningfully embed SMPs in everyday instruction. Each participant will receive a packet of SMP-specific resources, as well as a large SMP classroom poster.
OUTCOME
Participants will discover ways to deepen students’ knowledge of mathematical content by embedding the SMPs in instruction at all three levels of learning: Surface, Deep, and Transfer.
INSTRUCTOR
Judy Hickman, former Mathematics Director for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, and current Education Consultant for Big Ideas Learning.
Dive into California's Standards for Mathematical Practice
The newly revised California Mathematics Framework (2023) highlights the importance of using the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) as part of high-quality instructional strategies.
It is essential to embed these math practice standards into daily lessons. Teachers should integrate SMPs authentically to deepen students' understanding of the content.
The ultimate goal is to engage students in rich, high-level mathematical tasks that foster the approaches, practices, and habits of mind outlined in these standards.
To implement these practices effectively, educators should explore each Math Practice (MP) to understand how these strategies enhance student learning and engagement.
MP1: Make Sense of Problems and Persevere in Solving Them
Students who persevere in solving problems:
- Analyze problems in a way that aligns with the task.
- Develop a clear plan for solving the problem.
- Continuously ask, “Does this make sense?” while working through each step.
MP2: Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively
Students who reason abstractly and quantitatively:
- Make sense of quantities and relationships in problem situations.
- Move fluidly between contextual and abstract representations.
- Connect concepts and representations clearly.
Transform Your Teaching with Core SMP
MP3: Construct Viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others
Students who construct and critique arguments:
- Build logical arguments using assumptions, definitions, and prior knowledge.
- Use counterexamples effectively to challenge or refine ideas.
- Analyze others’ arguments and ask insightful questions to clarify or strengthen them.
MP4: Model with Mathematics
Students who model with mathematics:
- Apply prior knowledge to independently represent and solve real-world problems.
- Analyze and draw conclusions using tools like diagrams, graphs, flowcharts, and formulas.
- Use assumptions and approximations to simplify complex problems.
Integrate SMP into Daily Instruction
MP5: Use Appropriate Tools Strategically
Students who use tools strategically:
- Make informed decisions about which tools to use and how to apply them in specific situations.
- Utilize technology to visualize, analyze, and solve problems, deepening their mathematical understanding.
- Identify and leverage external resources to pose and solve problems effectively.
MP6: Attend to Precision
Students who attend to precision:
- Communicate their understanding clearly using correct mathematical language.
- Use precise definitions in discussions and reasoning.
- Calculate accurately and express answers to the appropriate level of precision.
Learn How to Effectively Put These SMP Into Practice
MP7: Look for and Make Use of Structure
Students who make use of structure:
- Recognize patterns, structures, and relationships within quantities, processes, expressions, and across topics.
- Apply properties and operations to make sense of problems.
- Use patterns, structures, and multiple representations to find effective and efficient solution paths.
MP8: Use Repeated Reasoning to Solve Problems
Students who express regularity in repeated reasoning:
- Identify patterns in calculations or processes to make generalizations.
- Build on prior knowledge to apply generalizations to new situations.
- Recognize repeated reasoning to understand and utilize procedural shortcuts.
